Professor Stephen Whitefield awarded a BA grant for a study of post-revolutionary Egypt

Congratulations to Stephen Whitefield, who has been awarded a grant from the British Academy for a project entitled The Dynamics of Political Development and its Cultural Expression in Post-Revolutionary Egypt.

The proposed research will embed the analysis of a mass survey of Egypt's electorate and political parties (conducted by the applicants in 2011-12) into broader discussion of major issues in contemporary Egyptian politics and society. These are: the political consequences of religiosity; the role of cultural production and social media; the role and status of women; and democratic political participation and representation. The collaborators will lead a series of four one-day-long research seminars, alternating between Oxford and Cairo, and two training workshops in Cairo. This collaborative initiative will result in the publication of four research papers and two mass media articles. It will forge a strong bond between Oxford and Cairo Universities and the American University of Cairo. Most importantly, it will enable collaboration on a major grant proposal to develop the research in a comparative context, in Egypt and across the region.

Stephen will be working on this project in collaboration with Dr Mazen Hassan (Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University), Dr Elisabeth Kendall (Senior Research Fellow in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Oxford) and Dr Nadine Sika (Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, American University in Cairo).

This project will run from 3 September 2012 to 2 September 2013.
