Ideas that shape the world

DPIR is one of the largest departments working in Politics and International Relations in the world.

With around 90 academic staff, it is world class in international and national research and teaching. The Guardian UK ranked us the Number One University in the UK for Politics in 2024. We are home to major research projects, a vibrant community of academic visitors, and a strong group of postdoctoral researchers, supported by highly competitive research fellowships, working across a broad range of disciplinary fields.

We are responsible for the Philosophy, Politics and Economics curriculum as well as training one of the largest groups of political scientists in the world.

Home to world-leading political scientists and thinkers

The work of our academics spans issues such as peace, conflict and security, race, gender, free speech, as well as justice, freedom and democracy. It shapes and informs policies at the local, national and international level, and supports major agencies like the UN, NATO, and The World Trade Organisation.

We are a nexus for big questions and big ideas. We develop innovative new ways for gathering, processing and analysing data; we create new theoretical frameworks; and our research projects tackle some of the most-pressing challenges around the globe.

Our diverse research community bridges International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Political Theory.
