Professor Rana Mitter writes on the effect of Chinas war with Japan

Date

Rana Mitter has written an article (16 August) in The Japan Times examining the effect that the 1937-1945 war between China and Japan has on both counties.

Rana comments on how recent changes in China have allowed a new perspective of this history to emerge.

I have been a beneficiary of the new openness, he writes, adding that Archives that were previously restricted or closed have allowed both Chinese and foreign researchers to gather materials to tell previously forbidden stories. As a result, I was able to give, for the first time in English, a comprehensive account of Chinas wartime experience that combined the stories of the Nationalists and Communists who resisted the Japanese, as well as those of Japans local collaborators.
