Professor David Anderson on ethnic Somalis in Kenya

Date

David Anderson was quoted in the Financial Times (29 June, 2012) in an article on Eastleigh, a Nairobi neighbourhood, which is also a business hub for the Somali diaspora in Kenya.

Commenting on Kenyan prejudices regarding the Somalis, David said theres a deeply rooted Kenyan problem that stigmatises the Somali as separatist and not part of the national story. They are easily demonised as a threat to Kenyan identity and stability, and perceived to have business practices that are discreet and exclusionary.

David, who is researching the neighbourhood, also explains some of the realities on the ground in Eastleigh. The full article can be read here.

David also took part in a panel discussion on Nigeria onChina Radio International. The podcast can be downloaded here.
