Last week the Economist led with a major article (20 August) on the state of democracy in Africa which discusses the work of Nic Cheeseman.
Nic is quoted as saying that of 91 presidents and prime ministers to have held office on the continent in civilian regimes since 1989, 45% once either served in the armed forces or were guerrillas before becoming politicians.
Nic's latest book, Democracy in Africa: Successes, Failures and the Struggle for Political Reform was published in 2015 by Cambridge University Press. Since then it has featured at #1 in the Amazon charts for "Africa" and "Democracy" and been cited in a number of different publications including the Economist and the Financial Times.
